Surrounded by Living Tissue by Oscar Guermouche

Oscar Guermouche explores language as a bearer of identity. His work focuses on connections between body and text, using questions of self-image, biography and belonging as a starting point. He is particularly interested in traditional male characters and environments, and the narratives that create them. The men find themselves trapped in the borderland between hero and monster, in a state of constant readiness.

His practice is based on the collecting, copying, and compiling of existing texts. However, in the works he uses a variety of techniques such as painting, drawing, installation, video, and sculpture.

In Surrounded by Living Tissue Guermouche has written “your clothes your boots your motorcycle” by hand throughout the entire book. The text is taken from Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and is one of the lines spoken by the terminator. The work’s title comes from a line about the terminator from the first film in the series, The Terminator (1984).

The work Surrounded by Living Tissue (drawing, ink on paper, 17×13 cm, 2016) is on display during the summer and fall of 2020 at the Praun & Guermouche showroom. Leonard Gustafssons bokbinderi
